In short, the two front wheels give you stability and control in soft sand, mud, snow and other off-road conditions. For a full explanation, please click here.
Rungu offers options for riders up to 6’6” (198 cm) and taller. For riders taller than 6’3” (190 cm), we recommend steering risers and saddle upgrades. Learn more on our post – “Rungu Height and Posture Guide”

With three wheels instead of two, Rungu is heavier than your standard bicycle or e-bike, but it’s only 20% the weight of an ATV!

Rungu Dualie can tow up to 300 lbs. (136 kg) – trailer and cargo. The Rungu Cargo Rack has an optional ball hitch that makes it easy to attach a deer cart or hitch-compatible trailer. If you don't want the Cargo Rack or want to use the Cargo rack for other purposes, Rungu offers the Rungu Deer Cart and Rungu Cargo Trailer. Both hook up to the Rungu Dualie with or without the Cargo Rack.
We design Rungu frames to support up to 350 lbs. This is combined weight of the rider plus cargo. Models that include the Rungu Cargo Rack support less because of the weight of the cargo rack and in some cases the additional battery.
The Cargo Rack can support up to 180 lbs. of weight evenly distributed on the upper surface, but this is not in addition to the weight of the rider and cargo. To determine how much weight you can put on the rack and ride safely, select the maximum load for a model with a Cargo Rack (Rungu Dualie Steep, Rugged or Dualie XR) and subtract your weight.
For example, if I weigh 185 lbs. If I’m riding the Dualie Steep, I subtract my weight from the max load of the Dualie Steep (344 lbs.). That leaves 159 lbs. for cargo load on the rack.

The rough answer - 20 miles per battery (40 miles for Rungu Dualie XR models), but it can be less or much, much more...
Range varies dramatically depending on terrain, loaded weight and road surface. The Rungu Dualie is designed and intended for off-road use, so we quote ranges on dirt roads in two ways – at optimum speed, motor-power only (with no power input from pedaling) and with pedal assist. In the case of pedal assist, we assume the same rider on the same terrain at the same speed but contributing 50W of power (about what you need to maintain 10-15 mph on level road/asphalt on a normal 2-wheel bike). For the sake of reference and comparison to other e-bikes, we now also show the estimated range on pavement on level ground.
To see range specifications by model, click here: Rungu Dualie Features and Specifications
Range is affected by hills, rider weight, head wind, tire pressure, speed and stopping/starting. The estimates are based on the weight of each MDV model with a 175 lb. (79 kg) rider. The estimates assume zero headwind, low steady speed (no stopping and starting), ideal tire pressure and a flat riding surface. The estimated pavement range is an optimized calculation. For off-road conditions such as deep snow, mud or soft sand, range can be significantly shorter even with optimal tire pressures. In practical experience, Rungu riders have achieved ranges exceeding 100 miles for the Rungu Dualie XR Steep on rolling terrain a variety of surfaces with stopping, starting, hill climbs and descents, off-road and on paved trails.
The standard Rungu Dualie configuration (off-road only) has a thumb throttle to control the motor. If you order your Rungu Dualie to be configured as a Class 1 e-bike, the factory removes the throttle prior to shipment. Class 1 e-bike motors can only be activated using pedal assist (PAS).
Yes. Rungu uses Li-Ion batteries that operate with predictable range down to -20 degrees Centigrade ( -4 degrees Farenheit). Batteries will continue to operate below the temperature specifications, but the impact on range is not well understood. At -20 degrees Centigrade, range decreases by 10% to 17%. To learn the three rules about battery management in winter, read our blog post on the subject.
We recommend the Rungu Dualie Hitch Rack v2.0. It was custom developed for Rungu Dualie e-bikes. If you are looking for other options, read our blog post to learn what works best for you.
Rungu's "hard-tail" design combined with the 4.8" tires gives some cushion to your ride, but you may want more. For that reason, we offer accessories that soften the ride - Rear Suspension Options. Both are "easy-to-retrofit" accessories that you can purchase after you've experienced riding with the standard saddle.
Yes. We offer a custom powder coat option, the option to have your Rungu Dualie wrapped (think camo) as well as the ability to source special accessories for your Rungu at the time of order. Special rates and lead times apply, and custom orders void our Return Policy. Warranty doesn't change.
Yes. We do offer a Rohloff Speed hub customization. Click/Tap here to learn more.
You can do both but be aware of local e-bike laws.
Rungu Dualie is designed to tackle the challenges of off-road riding, so the power specifications are beyond those for many prevailing e-bike classifications. As an example, the State of California classifies e-bikes as three different types – all with a maximum power output limit of 750W. Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes must have a maximum speed limit of 20 mph and Class 3 is allowed up to 28 mph. In Europe, maximum power limit for legal on-road use can be as low as 350 W. The nominal output for a Dualie mid-drive motor is 1,120 W with a maximum output of 1,429 W (just under two horsepower).
Rungu Dualie has on-the-fly configurable power levels, so you can comply with many prevailing e-bike laws by electronically changing your power setting. We ship each Rungu Dualie model configured with 5 power levels – each increment represents 20% of nominal/max power. To operate completely within California Class 2 (throttle or pedal assist), you can set the power level to 2 (40%), which equates to a nominal power output of 400W with a peak at 580W. To operate within the 350W threshold, set the power level to 1, which limits the power output to 200W with a peak of 290W. You can achieve power levels even closer to the maximums allowable by law, by reconfiguring the display to show 9 power levels of 10% each (the first level is 20%).
We can custom configure Rungu Dualie to comply strictly with local laws. Rungu Dualies can be configured in production so that they strictly comply as Class 1 or Class 2 e-bikes. And they get the labels to show as much, too!
Yes.
We ship Rungu all over the world. Rungu offers special programming for Canadian Customers to meet Canadian homologation requirements and to simplify import procedures. Contact sales@riderungu.com to learn how we can ship one to you, or if there is a distributor in your country, redirect you to their sales department.
No, but it’s not as difficult to operate at higher speeds either.

You can use a gas generator or solar generator to recharge in the backcountry. This blog details how to select a gas generator and how to predict the number of batteries you can charge with a tank of gas. The blog also helps you understand solar generator requirements if you prefer to use solar for backcountry battery charging.
