Rungu Dualie® vs. Single-Front Wheel E-Bikes

Rungu Dualie E-Bikes go where other fat-tire single-front-wheel E-Bikes cannot

Rungu Dualie E-Bikes take you and your gear on terrain where single-front-wheel fat-tire E-Bikes are guaranteed to let you down. Any experienced dirt-bike rider knows that skills alone may not prevent a washout (low-side fall) on soft sand, snow that’s more than a few inches deep or slick mud. So why would you expect a lower-power e-bike to do better?  When the single front wheel loses grip in a turn, even the fattest tires and a front-wheel hub motor won’t save you from going down. Double-front wheels guarantee you'll stay up where one wheel lets you down.

Rungu®'s Total Control wheelbase also helps you climb steeper.  You can climb 50%+ grade 4x4 trails without getting out of the saddle of a Rungu Dualie.  Ride in the saddle of a conventional fat-tire e-bike at that grade and you lose front-wheel-traction at 20%. Then what happens? They flip backwards! And what about AWD E-Bikes? You’ll be lucky to even climb up a 20% grade – AWD E-Bikes deliver less than half the torque of a mid-drive powered E-bike at that grade.

What about tall grass and sticks? Other mid-drive E-Bikes in the same class as Rungu Dualie struggle.  Sticks and weeds get caught in the derailleur and sprockets mangling both. The team at Rungu engineered two solutions - the Rohloff Internally Geared Hub upgrade and the Rungu Gear Shield.  Though expensive, the Rohloff Internally Geared Hub moves 14 speeds inside the hub so there’s no risk of a mangled cassette. The Rungu Gear Shield provides less expensive protection for your existing derailleur and cassette to keep you riding through tall grass, weeds and sticks without mangling your transmission.

Rungu Dualie Double Wheel Design goes far beyond the capabilities of a single-front-wheel e-bike and that's why the Texas Motor Press Association voted Rungu Dualie Texas Off-Road E-ATV of the Year – NOT E-bike of the year.

Heavier load, easier ride

Rungu Dualie stability and control pay dividends when carrying gear off-road.  Carrying more load above the wheels of any conventional E-Bike makes control more difficult.  As the center of gravity rises (carrying more load above the wheels) it takes more effort and control to keep a bike upright while riding.  The extra front wheel on a Rungu Dualie gives you more front-end grip for more control in turns, going straight, on and off-road.

"The Rungu bike I’ve had afield is most impressive. Nine sprockets, five boost modes from a powerful mid-drive motor boost it up hills and, at 25mph, down the road. A touch of the quick-start lever gets the wheels moving for an easy mount on slopes and in tough going. Engineering and components are top-tier. The rear rack – with a trailer-hitch ball – is broad and stout enough to hold a loaded backpack or a full box of apples. The unique front end, with two wheels, is both stable and easy to turn. One battery charge is good for 20 miles at “full assist” or 100 with help from the pedals. This Rungu threads narrow trails without tipping. Its aggressive tires claw through sand but hum nicely along pavement. A shock-absorbing seat takes the bump out of rocks. Easy-to-read gauges feed all necessary information, and then some. The Rungu isn't just a bike; in my view, it's a ticket to back-country adventure!"

Built and Supported in the US – Really!

You need to know you can count on your E-Bike manufacturer to support you or your local technician with parts and technical guidance. E-Bikes aren’t as complicated as cars, but they’re not as simple as pedal bikes; we build each Rungu Dualie E-Bike from imported and locally-source components and parts we fabricate at our factory in Santa Ana, CA. In short, we have spare parts. Our support page has comprehensive technical documentation and video resources to effect most repairs.  Not enough? We have a staff of engineers and technicians to answer the questions and help with troubleshooting.

More wheels, more power, better torque delivery

Rungu Dualie puts out the most rear wheel torque for E-Bikes in its class. Rungu Dualie uses the Bafang BBSHD motor but with 12% more power output than Bafang mid-drive motors operating at a nominal 48V.  Because of the added stability from the two front wheels, you can use all this low-end power to navigate difficult terrain at rock-crawling speeds. in a trailer. Rungu Dualie’s equipped with the BOX 2 Prime 9 derailleur and cassette use a 1:1.67 final gear ratio to generate 328 Nm (242 ft lbs.) of torque at the rear wheel at a speed of 5 mph.  It’s this kind of torque that lets you tow up to 300 lbs. Far more stable. Far more able.

Watch as a Rungu Dualie XR Steep pulls a trailer carrying 90 lbs. up 4,100 ft over 12 miles (average 6% grade).

The secret to high output torque at low speeds is the mid-drive motor.  Rungu Dualie's high power mid-drive motor has a nominal power rating of 1120 W, which is the amount you need to haul 250 lbs. through soft sand or 9” deep snow. In first gear, Rungu Dualie motors operate efficiently transferring power.  Many E-Bikes on the market, such as AWD E-Bikes, use hub-motor drives. Hub motors work well at higher speeds but E-Bikes with hub motors are hopeless on steep tracks, in snow, sand and mud.

Do you think that AWD (E-Bikes with motors in front and rear wheels) E-Bikes work better?  Think again. On a 25% grade, a 1,500W AWD e-bike delivers less torque than the rear wheel of a 250W mid-drive e-bike.

Range - Don't be anxious!

Rungu uses high-capacity batteries, and we test each one at our factory before it ever serves in a Rungu Dualie E-Bike. The Rungu Dualie Standard and Steep Models use 52V 16Ah (830 Wh) batteries that can achieve 19 miles of off-road range on a single charge with no pedaling! The Rugged model uses our newest 1000 Wh battery and the XR models use our Double-Up Battery system to achieve a whopping 1,872 Wh capacity on a single charge.  Not enough? You can carry spares and swap any of these batteries in the field.

More capacity means more range, but calculating actual range is more complicated than a “divide the battery capacity by x” formula. At Rungu, we’ve done extensive off-road testing to nail down real-world range estimates of what you should expect pedaling (or not). The engineering team has proven these calculations to within a mile. To get your FREE personalized Range Assessment, click here or tap the button below.
